The 69 Adventure

Chapter 1 – The Acquisition

Mother’s Day 2000 – My kids tell me I have their permission to look for another Camaro.  They agree that drag racing a basically 91 convertible isn’t the best idea.  I start the hunt for an appropriate car.  I’m in no rush and intermittent problems with the vert take up most of my energies.

Nov 2000 – ede sends me a pic of his 68 Camaro.  I decide I’d like one some day.

Spring 2001 – start seriously looking for a race car.  Look at a bunch of thirdgens…nothing that is quite what I want.   I look at a few first gens too, but they are way over priced and generally in really bad shape.

7/17/01  - ede tells me about a 69 Camaro a co-worker has.  I call Bill and he tells me a bit about the car.  It sounds like it would make a good race car!  The body panels have been replaced; the engine is from a 74 Chevelle wagon, temporary.  Jester tentatively agrees to consider building the engine.  I start to seriously consider how I would get this car from Ohio to NJ.

7/18/01 – talked to Bill again.  I WANT this car.  Bill has taken pictures and will send them to me when the film is developed.   Still troubled with logistics, tho.  Jester is talking about a ZZ4 engine.

7/19/01 – ede tells me he is going to Va Beach next weekend for the Gathering.  I already have arrangements for Kat to drive me down.  I can ask Kat to drive back by himself and hitch a ride back to Ohio with ede and Pam.  Ede gives me the numbers for Ryder and U-Haul.  This is almost sounding too easy.

7/20/01 - I have rented a 15ft Ryder truck and an auto carrier (flatbed).  They will be waiting in Jackson, Ohio on Monday, 8./30,  Bill will have the car at ede’s before we get back from Va Beach.

I also called DMV.  For $33.50 and 2 pictures, I can get QQ (historic) plates.  If you have QQ plates, there is no inspection or emission requirements.

Ede is going to take the Monday off work to help me load up the car.  Kat has agreed to chauffeur to va beach and come back on his own.  Jester is sending me URLs of crate engines and my mind is spinning with a hundred different ideas.

7/21/01 - I have to tell Stella why I am leaving a day early.  I also talk to Mac.  He has to work Monday or I would stop by to have lunch with him.  I am still trying to keep news of the car quiet – I am so afraid of jinxing this.

7/23/01 – the pictures came next day mail.  I took pics of the pics with the digital camera and sent them to Jester and Mac and Kat.
She is rough, but the body looks straight.  Interior isn’t terrific, and when I mention it to Jester, he reminds me this is a race car not a restored car.

7/25/01 – my auto insurance won’t cover the truck and trailer – it’s not a personal passenger vehicle.  Will add the insurance via Ryder when I get there.  Mac got off work Monday - I'll stop and have a late lunch with him.

7/26/01 – ede sends me a message that Bill is going to call.  There is a problem with the title.  Now that I have committed to this car, I want it.  Bill calls after I go to the center and Sam gives him my cell number.  Whatever the problem is will be resolved and I shouldn’t worry about it.  Ede is leaving for Va beach in the morning and I will meet up with him and Pam Saturday at the track.
